On Sunday, May 4 at 5:00 PM, I’m bringing the Justin Pierce Jazz Group to perform at Fort Worth Presbyterian Church as part of the Bluebonnet Sessions concert series. It also happens to be Star Wars Day—so yes, May the 4th be with you.
If you’re looking for the best jazz band in Dallas to see live, I’d love for you to join us. Whether you come for the music or just need a great reason to get out of the house, this will be a night of swing, soul, and connection.
We’ll start the evening with the Southwest High School Jazz Band, directed by Adam Kramer. This group of talented young musicians represents the next generation of jazz in our city. Their dedication and energy are always refreshing to hear, and it’s a joy to share the stage with them.
After that, I’ll lead the Justin Pierce Jazz Group—a collection of close friends and collaborators who also happen to be some of the top jazz musicians in the Dallas–Fort Worth area. Each of us studied together at UNT in the One O’Clock Lab Band, and we’re reuniting for this concert before heading into the studio the very next day. Because of that, the group will be especially dialed in and ready to create something unforgettable.
Joining me on stage are musicians I trust deeply—both personally and musically. My wife, Ashley Pierce, will be singing with us. Her warmth, elegance, and emotional depth always bring the music to life. On piano, Sean Michael Giddingsjoins us. He tours with Christopher Cross and Pat Green, and also releases music through Origin Records. We’ll be joined on drums by Matt Young, an award-winning artist and member of White Denim, with international festival credits and a remarkable creative range. Holding down the low end is Young Heo, who brings clarity and groove to the group. A member of the Dallas String Quartet, he’s recorded on more than 20 studio albums and frequently collaborates with jazz greats like Ellis Marsalis and Delfeayo Marsalis.
As for me, I’ll be on saxophone. Over the years, I’ve had the joy of performing with artists like The Temptations, Doc Severinsen, and Arturo Sandoval. That said, concerts like this—intimate, joyful, and community-driven—are the ones that stay with me the most.
